Living just 45 minutes away from the beach certainly has it’s perks. Like you’re able to go all the time. But on the day of Ocean City Air Show, it was not a 45 minute drive… more like 1 hour and 45 minutes.
The Island was a madhouse. There are estimates that 350,000 people were in attendance for the Air Show just on Saturday.
That’s a lot of people. Just think, an NFL arena can only hold 100,000 people. This was three times as much.
And I think a lot of that had to do with the weather.
The weather was fantastic. With temperatures around 80 degrees, lots of sun, and a breeze to help you cool down when it did get too hot. Either way, it was a fantastic weekend for the air show.
At least for me it was perfect. And the air show itself was pretty cool! It was my first one that I’ve seen and it lived up to all of the excitement.
I got to see the Canadian Snowbirds and the Blue Angels. The Blue Angels are the second oldest formal flying aerobatic team in the world. They are a part of the U.S. Navy.
When they roar their engines and fly in formation…. they are only 18 inches apart!
Not 18 feet, but 18 inches.
The Air Show had a fleet of planes, I couldn’t tell you a single thing about any of them, but you could tell that each one was special because we have an incredible military.
Watching these planes fly by, one after another, and doing flips and tricks was amazing. And they has smoke and they made some cool formations in the sky.
The crowd cheered as the planes went by.
I claimed my spot on the beach right on 37th street. It was nearly the end of the air show, but we still had a great view. At the start of the show the planes would turn around right where I sat, but then once the Blue Angels came out, it didn’t even matter because they zoomed all over the beach, from North to South.
I do think for next year, I’ll get there a little earlier and place my beach chair a little closer towards the center of action. That way when they cross each other in the sky you can see that right in front of you.
This was a fantastic thing to see and I can’t wait to see what they have for next year.
I encourage you to go if you have never seen an air show before. It’s a nice weekend getaway or a day trip if you live within the area. Just be sure to leave early because the traffic will only get worse throughout the day… but the traffic was worth it.
